Generation gap in new technology

By dpradi

Just some thoughts about how new technology these days may create a gap between one generation to the other and how its functions and capabilities may affects generation x in particular.

Maybe what we are lacking now is how technology shouldn’t be too futuristic (or keep on growing) without actually considering about the end-user?

Reflecting on from what Chris mentioned in class, it makes me wonder, how generation x is ‘adapting’ to the advance technology while the rest of the generations are adapting well and look for something more and greater. Lets take a mobile phone as an example. Last semester our group had a focus group and a mother said how she’s not quite confident using all the technology that are around us now. Therefore she wants a mobile phone that has the most simple features that she could use easily. She doesn’t need all the fancy stuff like mp3, camera and all others. However in the end she doesn’t have much choice, but to buy a phone that has unnecessary features that she couldn’t use. Problems? Difficulty in using the device and costing her for something that she can’t even use.

The existence of internet, emails and those virtual communication also creating a big gap between parents and children in communication. The young generation now a days are often spend most of their time in front of their computers or mobile phones. They are sometimes just cannot get away from it. As if they are attached to their communication tools. As a result, the young generation are much less to have physical contact, and interact in person with their parents.
